Every route ends the same way: Talebuddy shows you what the assistant is asking for, you approve it once, and the conversation can reach your story from then on.
Claude (claude.ai and the desktop app)
The shortest route. No key, no config file.
- 1Open Claude's settings and find connectors — the section for adding a custom connector or MCP server.

- 3Claude opens Talebuddy, where you sign in and approve the connection once.
- 4Back in the chat, ask for something concrete: "list my tales" or "save these characters to The Ashen Isles".

It can
- Find a tale by name, or search across your concept notes, ledgers, and manuscript text
- Start a new tale
- Add to a tale's concept notes — the scratchpad you keep before the prose
- Create characters, locations, items, and lore, including how they relate to each other
- Update and tidy ledger entries you already have
- Read your manuscript, or one chapter of it, to check that something stays consistent
It cannot
- Write, rewrite, or delete your prose — the manuscript is read-only through this connection
- Publish a tale, or change whether one is published
- Reach tales stored only on your device, which is where Explorer-plan tales live
- See your account, billing, or payment details
Questions
Fair questions, straight answers.
Which assistants can connect?
Anything that supports MCP. Claude and ChatGPT connect from their connector settings with just the URL. Claude Code takes one command. Cursor, Windsurf, and other clients either accept the URL directly or bridge to it with mcp-remote.
Do I need an API key?
No. Connecting signs you in through Talebuddy and the assistant holds a token it can refresh on its own. API keys still exist for scripts and tools that cannot run a sign-in flow; you can create one in your dashboard under Integrations.
Can the assistant change what I have written?
It can add to your concept notes and maintain your ledger, because that is bookkeeping you would otherwise do by hand. It cannot touch your manuscript. Talebuddy does not expose any way for a connected assistant to write prose, so this is not a setting that can be turned on by accident.
Why does this need a paid plan?
A connected assistant reaches your tales through Talebuddy's servers, and tales on the free Explorer plan never leave your own device. Creator and Archivist plans keep your tales in sync in the cloud, which is what makes them reachable at all.
How do I disconnect?
Open your Talebuddy dashboard, go to Integrations, and disconnect it under Connected applications. Access stops immediately. Anything the assistant already wrote stays in your tale.
What does the assistant do with what it reads?
That is between you and whichever assistant you connect — their terms govern what happens to a conversation. Talebuddy sends only what a request asks for, and only for the tales in the account that approved the connection.
